PRACTICAL INFORMATION

CLIMATE AND WHAT TO PACK

The Cayman Islands enjoy a warm tropical climate year-round, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 80°F to 88°F (27°C to 31°C). Light, breathable clothing is ideal, though a light sweater may be useful for air-conditioned venues. If your plans include beach time or outdoor excursions, don’t forget swimwear, sunscreen, and a hat. During the rainy season (May to November), a light rain jacket or umbrella can also be handy.

ELECTRICITY AND DEVICES

The Cayman Islands use the same electrical standards as the United States — 120V, 60Hz, with Type A and B outlets. Visitors from North America will not need adapters, while travellers from other regions may require plug converters and voltage adaptors. Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and conference venues, with good mobile coverage across the Islands.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Getting around Grand Cayman is straightforward and flexible, with several convenient transport options available to visitors. The island’s public minibuses operate along designated routes between George Town, West Bay, Bodden Town, and East End, offering an affordable and reliable way to explore the island - just flag one down roadside and pay the modest fare in cash. Taxis are readily available at the airport, hotels, and major attractions, though fares are set rather than metered, so it’s wise to confirm the cost in advance. For those preferring independent travel, rental cars and scooters are widely available and for eco-conscious or active visitors, bicycles and e-bikes can be hired in George Town and along Seven Mile Beach. While distances are manageable, keep in mind that driving is on the left-hand side and helmets are mandatory for scooter riders.

CURRENCY AND PAYMENTS

The local currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD), which is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate (1 KYD = 1.20 USD). US Dollars are widely accepted throughout the Islands and most businesses accept major credit and debit cards. ATMs are readily available. However, it’s a good idea to carry a small amount of local or US cash for taxis or small vendors which may not accept cards.

RELIGION AND DRESSCODE

The Cayman Islands is a predominantly Christian society with a respectful but relaxed approach to religious and cultural customs. There are no formal dress codes for visitors, though modest attire is appreciated when visiting churches or public offices. Swimwear should be reserved for beaches and pools — cover-ups or shirts are expected in public areas outside these spaces. No topless/nude bathing in public or private areas is permitted.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Grand Cayman is widely regarded as one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean, with low levels of crime and a strong police presence contributing to a welcoming and secure environment for visitors. The island enjoys a reputation for public safety, and tourists can generally explore freely, including in the evenings, especially in well-populated areas like Seven Mile Beach, George Town, and Camana Bay. As with any destination, basic precautions are advisable, such as securing valuables, locking rental vehicles, and staying aware of your surroundings. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is professional and responsive, and emergency services are reliable and easily accessible. Overall, Grand Cayman offers a relaxed and safe setting for both leisure and business travel.
